Gary Smith's formal experiences with music started with lessons on the trumpet and later included baritone horn, tuba, percussion instruments, piano, viola, electric guitar, bass, and voice. Playing professionally as a teenager while living in Hawaii as a vocalist and instrumentalist, Gary continued his musical journey at the University of Hawaii studying and performing traditional and contemporary music. "My college years were incredible. I was immersed in music classes during the day and performed in Waikiki at night." Additional studies included classes at Berklee College of Music, graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a two time participant of "Jazz in July" both as an instrumentalist and vocalist. At this juncture his focus is performing as a vocalist from the Great American Songbook. "I love this music and have since childhood. The lyrics and melodies are some of the greatest contributions to our American culture.
